Biography
Tapestry weaver, fascinated with colour and markmaking, influenced by a childhood in Africa.
Raised in West and East Africa, the creativity of the continent has remained a constant inspiration in my work.
With few external influences, my childhood world revolved around the the colours of burnt ochre, gold and azure blue, and patterns on textiles, pottery and metal created by skilled artisans.
Now living in Devon and surrounded with traditional western artistic dominance, nonetheless my earliest memories continue to shape my visual language. Whilst Africa dominates, I also feel an affinity with those areas of the UK which retain their own language and culture and am interested in learning more about these once historical tribal lands. Research is a key part of my practice – a deep dive into the history, stories and artefacts of these places gives constant inspiration.
I have a love of colour and markmaking – my designs are deceptively simple: graduated planes of colour which gives the tapestry space to breathe and reflects my heritage.
