Biography
Professional blacksmith, designing and making original work for homes and gardens with emphasis on 3-Dimensional design.
Working with traditional blacksmiths’ tools, such as, hammers, tongs, anvils and fire, I started my business in 1978 in Wiltshire. Throughout my working life I have endeavoured to produce original designs which emphasis three-dimensional creativity.
Quality is paramount in my work, as is honest treatment of the materials which I use, mainly steel, sometimes stainless steel, occasionally copper.
Generally the pieces are manipulated hot, employing heat in one form or another. The heat may be from a traditional blacksmiths’ coal forge, one of my propane gas furnaces or lately an induction furnace, although furnace is a bit of a misnomer, because this particular form of heat is the product of an intense magnetic field applied to the metal.
As a self taught practitioner of the ‘dark arts’ of blacksmithing, I have learned from my mistakes but basked in my successes, of which there are more of the latter I am pleased to admit.
I have run day courses at my various forge locations since 1984, for members of the public to experience the excitement of hammering hot metal, by hammer and hand.
I am in receipt of both bronze and a silver medals from the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths of London. I am also a Freeman of the City of London.
My present forge/workshop is at Bickleigh Farm, Halwell, Totnes, Devon. TQ9 7HZ.
