Contemporary Passions 2022
An exhibition by members of South Hams Arts Forum (SHAF)
Tuesday 5th – Sunday 17th July 2022
Since at least 2009, SHAF members have been holding the Contemporary Passions exhibition in Harbour House. Each Summer, a number of SHAF artists collaborate on the theme of their new work, and their current passions. It is always a pleasure to take part, and the resulting exhibition showcases a variety of media, in 2D and 3D. Such as painting, printmaking and ceramics, mosaics, plus occasional surprises, making an interesting and varied exhibition.
This year SHAF Contemporary Passions has attracted artists and crafts people who are new to South Devon, bringing with them their established reputations. The exhibitors this year include both professional and semi-professional artists, several of whom also teach.
Artists taking part in 2022:
Marble artist Rachel O’Connell creates home accessories including aprons, soft furnishings and vessels using sustainable leather, cork, fabric, paper, glass and ceramics and, with her zero-waste philosophy in mind, vintage denim and repurposed copper thread. Rachel uses the traditional tools and slow, considered process of heritage crafts to produce her contemporary designs.
A mosaicist since 1994, Kate Rattray will show wall sculptures, constructed with wire, cement mixes, plaster and polystyrene before the addition of a mosaic skin. Themes include birds and moths in flight, and alongside nature Kate’s inspiration includes religion, mythology, metamorphosis – and the apocalypse.
Patricia Hitchens, known for her expressive painting and life drawing, has recently also rekindled a love of jewellery making, upcycling older jewellery and incorporating sea plastic and glass to give a distinctive look to her statement rings and quirky pieces.
A professional ceramic artist since 1998, Susan Luker has established a name for herself with her smoke fired Raku work. In recent years she has explored the potential of crawl and lichen glazes, clay slips and engobes, painted directly onto her hand built sculptural pots. Her newest work is inspired by human interaction with nature.
Alison Hannah’s creative practice combines poetry, paintings and ceramics, inspired by the landscape and shoreline of the south west and capturing the interactions between people and landscape. Social and conservation issues are considered in her practice.
Having lived on the edge of Dartmoor and now in the South Hams, watercolourist Christine Pascoe takes inspiration from her surroundings and she enjoys painting en plein air and in a naturalistic style. Her commissioned work has included animal portraits, houses and gardens, and from her self-taught beginnings she has gone on to tutor others.
Jane Davarian is inspired by memories, people and “cultures rich in indigenous art”, and architectural and textile designs encountered on her travels may find their way into her printmaking, where bold monochrome allows for clarity of detail.
Heather Morfett enjoys the endless possibilities of working with clay and the need to embrace its unpredictability. Working as a therapist she is interested in how art and artmaking can shine a light on hidden issues, and she takes her creative inspiration from events in her life which have moved her as well as from her environment and her travels.

The SHAF Arts Trail
The SHAF ARTS TRAIL 15th – 30th October 2022 provides an opportunity for visitors to view and buy work directly from the makers. Visitors can discover paintings, ceramics, sculpture, jewellery, lampshades, mosaics, hand-turned wooden items and furniture, felt, paper and textile art, photography, basketry, printmaking and much more. This year the Arts Trail features 50 artists across the South Hams.
Visitors will find artists exhibiting in their homes and studios, in galleries, exhibition halls, hotels and pubs. Following the Arts Trail provides visitors with a wonderful opportunity to explore the glorious South Hams and discover places they never knew existed.
The Arts Trail Brochure
The Arts Trail Brochure (released on Sept 1st) provides ‘at a glance’ information to help visitors plan their route: a map of the area shows where all participating artists may be found, and venues are listed for easy reference; Venue Opening Dates and Times are listed, as well as artists by name, their venue and the page on which they appear in the brochure. This enables visitors on the trail of specific artists to locate them easily.
Following the Arts Trail enables visitors to discover the latest works of their favourite artists … and find new artists and types of artwork to add to their ‘favourites’ list. SHAF hopes all visitors to the Arts Trail will have a wonderful time and will take the opportunity to drop in for a delicious lunch or cream tea at one of the cafes, hotels, pubs and restaurants advertised in the brochure.

Eight artists from SHAF present a delightful Christmas-themed exhibition. With jewellery, leather works, printmaking, painting, textile art and pyrography, there’s sure to be something to inspire and tempt visitors in search of unique gifts. Unsurprisingly, the local landscape of south Devon provides inspiration to many of the artists and makers in this Christmas showcase.
Artists taking part:
Illustrator Lucy Cartwright combines inspiration from the countryside and the sea on her doorstep with a love of art deco posters, vintage prints and textile patterns. When not producing work for commission, her work often features animals and plants in vibrant, rich patterns on cushions, fabrics, wallpaper, cards and accessories.
Wildlife artist John Ashton is well known for his published writing about local birdlife, his illustrations and his oil paintings. With a lifelong passion for wildlife, his career before settling in south Devon has included taxidermy and working as a roadie for major rock bands.
Printmaker Emma Cook works at a tiny etching press to produce exquisite collagraph miniatures which she embellishes with beads, metals and thread. Inspired by the coastline of the South Hams, her work is characterised by circle forms and a palette of rich blues and greens.
Charlotte Dalrymple-Hay lives by the ancient Indian proverb: “certain things may catch your eye, but pursue only those that capture your heart” and in her silver jewellery she responds to elements of the natural environment that surrounds her.
Lou Griffiths of New Ember Pyrography works with sustainable bamboo and locally sourced wood to produce her candle holders, serving boards and grazing platters, collectable wooden homeware with wood-burnt artwork to “bring the outdoors in by adding nature to your home.”
Leather artisan and marble artist Rachel O’Connell created Rocworx in her passion to create beautiful and practical home accessories and aprons. She uses sustainable and compostable materials: veg-tanned leather, Dartmoor sheepskin, organic oilskin, wool, cork, linen, vintage denim and repurposed copper thread, and incorporates marbling techniques. Leather work is a heritage craft, and Rachel uses traditional tools and a slow, considered process to produce her contemporary designs.
Cheryl Tipple-Trepat has a joyous love of nature and her work in ink, printmaking and digital art has been described as “elemental, bright and gently bold, full of character and sometimes quirk… an emotional response to landscape and nature.” More deeply Cheryl believes in taking a stand when nature is threatened.
Textile artist Sue Burton works with textile processes to reflect the changing seasons in the natural world around her. Wherever possible she sues vintage, organic or recycled materials to produce and package her cards, pictures, garlands and gifts.
