Biography

Full Biography

I have been working as a Metalsmith since graduating from Sheffield Polytechnic in 1987 with a BA (Hons) in three dimensional design specialising in silversmithing and jewellery.

My own workshop is based from my home, which has been perfect around family life, with my daughter now following my footsteps; she has recently set up her own delightful jewellery business, Silver Fescue.

Since growing up in a small country village in Devon, I have always loved the wild flowers growing in the hedgerows, and enjoyed the many trips to the beach. This started my collecting interests initially, and now influences my work today.

The many beach finds are in various containers around my home, including jars of colour coded sea glass, which line my workshop window. I’m fascinated by the weathering process this sea glass has undergone after decades of being pounded by the sea, the smoothness and the frosted look gained. These ‘sea jewels’ I often use in my work, and customers will on occasion, bring me their own special finds, to create a piece of jewellery for them.

About 20 years ago I took up surfing which has again influenced my work, having seen first-hand what polluting is doing to our seas, this has encouraged me further, from design to production to use 100% recycled materials, eco packaging, and UK based suppliers.

My work often combines precious and non- precious materials, and I use a variety of traditional techniques and materials. I make one off individual pieces and take on commission work.

Over the past 10 years I have worked teaching jewellery evening classes at Plymouth College of Art, now the Arts University Plymouth where I’m again working part time. I founded in 2016 the jewellery making workshops at Bigbury Mint, Ermington and also teach 1:1 lessons from my own workshop.
