Biography
I just paint what inspires me. That can be anything, from a pot on a market stall to a view of Dartmoor, or a bowl of fruit and a group of friends sitting round the dinner table.
I studied Art at Farnham then Bath Academy and in Nice. I lived in Provence, where my mother was from, for 10 years and had a screen-printing studio there and made films. I also became interested in building houses which I’m still involved in.
I am obsessed with colour, as my mother was who also painted. We’d often have long chats about the extraordinary variety and subtle qualities of colours whilst sitting together on a bench in Regents Park.
While much of my earlier work was in acrylic, more recently it has been mostly in oils. Both mediums are great, but in very different ways. Acrylics are more immediate and I tend to use them for abstract paintings. But there’s a depth in oils. You can move things around and blend colours together. There’s just more flexibility.
I take a lot of photos and sometimes they become a starting point for a painting. I can capture something quirky or beautiful with a photo, and this serves as a basis for composition.
Most of these paintings have been done whilst listening to Eckhart Tolle. I hope my work embodies a sense of Presence.
